The small park that is Disney’s Hollywood Studios is undergoing rapid change and in this update we will take a look at the changes coming to Animation Courtyard, the new Muppets coaster and Monstropolis.
Over at the former Rockin Roller Coaster soon to be turned Muppets Coaster, the iconic upside down car is being painted in a variety of colors that really make it pop. These colors are themed after the Electric Mayhem band which this ride will be based on and feature songs from. The guitar itself is under scaffolding as it too gets repainted ahead of the coaster reopening. This coaster is scheduled to be open in May just in time for the summer season.
Moving to the Animation Courtyard, construction is really picking up steam here. Numerous walls surround the site and Disney has given an opening date for some of the new area. Disney has stated that the courtyard will open in May while the interior of the Animation building will open later this year. In the courtyard area Disney had previously mentioned there will be a variety of meet and greet opportunities. The courtyard is looking nice with crews working on the existing landscaping as well as placing colorful new tiles in front of the Animation building. Connection points for the Animation marquee sign as well as the giant Mickey hat are going in at this moment with installation of those elements likely to come very soon. Work on the marquee sign is progressing well with painting continuing. Over the weekend, Walt Disney Imagineering installed the iconic Mickey Hat over the marquee.
The door coaster over at Monstropolis has now gone vertical. This coaster is moving very fast and it needs to because it is a massive building. Five black supports have gone up on the corner of the foundation pad and you can see plenty more foundation caps waiting to be taken off and replaced with more supports. Take a look at how small the construction crew is in relation to the tall supports and the whole site in general.
Crews continue to work on putting rebar into the other portions of the site as they get ready for more concrete pours. If you take a look at all of the foundation caps you can get an early glimpse of a portion of the ride layout and maintenance bay areas. According to the animation that Disney released awhile back, the station area will have four loading areas that will converge into one track when you leave the station and you can kind of see those four loading areas starting to form here. Tons of rebar and conduit are being installed in this area as this seems to be the site of the next concrete pour.
Over at the rest of Monstropolis, tons of scaffolding is up for the retheming of the area. Close to the entrance of the land, crews are transforming the former Muppetvision theater into the The Glob theater which will play host to a new show when the land opens. Painting continues on some of the surrounding facades to make it feel more like the city from the movie. The former Pizzo Rizzo has been stripped of all its glory and is just a plain and naked building for now. A while back crews demolished the Muppets gift shop which really opened up this land and allowed for some nice breathing room. In its place will be a wide walkway and a nice size plaza with some trees and benches. It is not known when Monstropolis will open but it is speculated that it will open sometime in 2028. Not much is known about the roller coaster either, but we are hoping to get more details about this project and all of the other Walt Disney World projects this year at D23. Hopefully we get more ride details, land details, and opening years. This will be Disney’s first ever suspended roller coaster and based on the model that was presented at D23 in 2024, this coaster will not be going upside down and will be for the entire family to enjoy. The show for The Glob theater is rumored to be styled based on a late night type of show with Mike Wasoksi. The main restaurant in the land will be Harry Hausen’s sushi restaurant from the movie, but I am sure there will be a secondary quick service restaurant. There will also be a small children’s playground in the courtyard if the coaster for little kids to play on while they wait for the bigger kids to get off the ride.
