So after numerous rumors it seems like there’s a strong chance that after this upcoming refurb King Kong will lose its 3D element at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Currently Earthquake on the Studio Tour is under a refurbishment. It is not known how long it will be under refurb, but the rumor is that after Earthquake reopens, King Kong will go down for refurb next. It is also rumored that during this refurb the ride will switch from 3D to 2D as it has recently done in Orlando’s version of the attraction.
This has been a long time coming as last year Fast and Furious Supercharged permanently closed and that was the only other 3D attraction on the Studio Tour. Taking 3D off of King Kong makes sense as it saves a ton of money on replacements of the glasses and cleaning of the glasses. Plus those glasses end up everywhere along the tour route and tour plaza which requires a lot of cleanup. It will be unfortunate though if it does lose 3D because the attraction looks great in 3D and reports coming out of Orlando indicate it is substantially worse after going 2D.
We shall see if this rumor does indeed come to fruition, stay tuned as this story will be updated after Kong comes out of refurb. The attraction is expected to go under refurb starting February 23rd and reopen sometime in March.
